Let the Games[manship] Begin - Ryder Cup Golf News

It is Wednesday, as I write this, two days before the matches begin – and already the gamesmanship is well under way. Those of us who intimately understand the Ryder Cup competition appreciate that the game inside the head is often more telling than quality of the ball striking for the three days that the matches are contested.

The Irish media ruffled the feathers of the US team (or the fir of Tiger Woods, if you prefer) by publishing bogus nude pictures of Tiger’s wife, Nordegren.

The Dubliner magazine wrote:
"Most American golfers are married to women who cannot keep their clothes on in public," the magazine wrote. "Is it too much to ask that they leave them at home for the Ryder Cup? Consider the evidence. Tiger Woods' wife can be found in a variety of sweaty poses on porn sites."

The US team was quick to show their public support of their teammate and unofficial leader by decrying the publication and those responsible for it. US Captain Tom Lehman questioned the timing and motive of publishing the article and Phil Mickelson opined "I don't think it shows too much about your profession," when asked for his reaction. Privately Mickelson and most of the US team offered top dollar for any legitimate porn picture of Nordegren.

Anxious not to be one-upped in the talking smack arena, several members of the US team ridiculed the pink sweater worn by Colin Montgomerie during his practice round on Tuesday. US Ryder Cup Team rookie Vaughn Taylor called the sweater “maybe the ugliest article of clothing that I have ever seen.” David Toms, a Ryder Cup veteran, said “it made me laugh.”

Tuesday evening US team captain Lehman invited many of the European team to his hotel suite under the pretext of serving them dinner and showing them videos of some professional women’s beach volleyball matches, but the European team members left in a huff when Lehman attempted to get them to eat some tainted spinach and produced videos only of the men’s Iranian luge team.
